Walks worth slowing down for
From gentle coastal walks to challenging climbs, Freycinet is best explored on foot. Wander to quiet bays, take in sweeping coastal views or climb high into the Hazards — there’s a walk here for almost every kind of day.
-
One of Freycinet’s most iconic walks, climbing through coastal woodland and granite boulders to that unmistakable view over Wineglass Bay. Allow around 1–1.5 hours return for the 2.6 km walk. It’s a Grade 3 track with a steady uphill climb and plenty of steps — but the view at the top is worth taking your time for.
-
Big views without the big hike. This easy 600 m circuit takes around 20 minutes, following an elevated boardwalk around Cape Tourville Lighthouse with views towards the Hazards, Wineglass Bay and the coastline beyond. It’s a Grade 1 walk and a lovely choice for a slower day in Freycinet.
-
For those with a little more time, this 11 km circuit takes around 4–5 hours and gives you a much deeper look at Freycinet. Walk beyond the Wineglass Bay Lookout, descend to the beach, cross the peninsula and follow the long stretch of Hazards Beach before returning through coastal woodland. Grade 4, so come prepared for a proper walk.
-
One for experienced walkers looking for a challenge. This 3.6 km return climb takes around 3 hours, crossing very steep granite slabs before reaching extraordinary panoramic views over Wineglass Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula. It’s Grade 4 and should not be attempted when the rock is wet or rain is likely. Good footwear, fitness and bushwalking experience are essential.
SEE FREYCINET FROM THE WATER
Discover the coast from a different perspective
See Freycinet from the sea, cruising beneath dramatic pink granite cliffs, past secluded beaches and along one of Tasmania’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Keep watch for dolphins, seals, seabirds and other marine life along the way.
WILDLIFE
Meet the locals
Freycinet is home to plenty of locals who don’t need an introduction. Keep an eye out for wallabies, wombats, echidnas and native birdlife as you explore — and don’t be surprised if a wallaby wanders past while you’re relaxing at your stay.
Take your time, keep a respectful distance and never feed wildlife. The best encounters are the ones that happen naturally.
BEACHES & COAST
Where the mountains meet the sea
From sheltered turquoise bays to long stretches of wild coastline, Freycinet’s beaches are as varied as the landscape around them. Swim in the calm waters of Honeymoon Bay, wander the white sands of Wineglass Bay or find a quieter stretch of coast and stay a little longer than planned.
TASTE THE EAST COAST
Freycinet tastes pretty good too
Fresh oysters straight from the bay, local seafood, cool-climate wines and produce from Tasmania’s East Coast — good food is part of the Freycinet experience. Leave a little room in your plans to stop, taste and discover a few local favourites along the way.
